PAY IT FORWARD: Volunteer This Summer and Make Connections! | ShesIt

Summer Volunteer Activities

As the summer solstice just occurred on June 21st, we are ready to soak up the sun and have a nice swim in the ocean (or pool). Summer is a time of relaxation, rejuvenation and releasing whatever stress is still stored up within you. That being said, when we get too bored with summer after repetitive beach days, perhaps we can offer ourselves to a volunteer experience. Then we can be able to truly have a meaningful summer aligned with giving, gratitude, and joy.

Volunteering is simply about making connections with others and spreading your kindness.

As a ballet dancer, I have spent many summers volunteering in schools and local senior centers, simply performing with other students and bringing light to people through music and movement. If you are in the arts field and have a gift that you can share with others, go to your local hospital/homeless shelter/senior center, etc. to shine your light. Whether you play an instrument, do jazz, write poetry or paint unique figures, showcasing your authentic self will help awaken your divine truth as well as help heal anyone you choose to share it with.

Volunteering can come in many forms. My coworker’s sister Ilene has been going to Volunteer Match to find organizations that speak to her. She has been connecting to Paws of L.A rescue in hopes of finding her new best friend, i.e. a dog, that is looking for a loving home. This is an inspiring way to connect doggies with their new owners, in that they both need healing in the form of love and connection.

Another wonderful way to get involved would be to dedicate your time within your specific neighborhood.

My childhood family friend Nancy always devotes her family time to helping others in any way she can. She dedicates each Sunday to taking her kids to an organization that is in need. They are connected with the Food Bank for New York City, which is a great way parents and kids can get involved and help sort donated and bulk items into boxes of specific categories. There is also an opportunity to host Shop & Stock events where volunteers (starting at the age of 13) can help restock shelves and help clients get items from the pantry.

“These great volunteer opportunities for kids in NYC will help your family learn about giving and give back to the community year-round!” – Time Out

City Harvest is another beautiful volunteer opportunity. My best friend from high school, Sarah, worked to support the 1.4 million New Yorkers living in poverty. This organization aims to save perfectly good food that may otherwise be thrown out, a truly beautiful and simple way to help others. She brings her friends and younger brothers to be a part of this experience, and she helps to coordinate food drives whenever she can.

If you have a child and are looking for that perfect learning experience for them as well as for yourself, make a weekly or monthly contribution to your community and volunteer in charitable projects. The spirit of lending a hand creates harmony within the energetic field, thus creating more love and light in the universe.

Whether you desire to volunteer at a soup kitchen, a senior center or a park surrounded by dogs, the point is to expand your love and consciousness through whatever means you feel more connected to yourself.

At the end of the day, giving back is about showing unconditional love, and if you are loving yourself unconditionally, you can easily share that love and create a ripple effect in the universe. How will you choose to pay it forward this season?
