RELATIONSHIPS: Dear Deiona, A Letter To My Younger Self

A Letter to Young Deiona

Hey Little Deiona,

We are currently 24 years old and are on a completely different path than what you expected to be on. I know, I know, you are really scared of change—that is something that remains a fact—but, change is something you have grown to accept. Everything in life isn’t going to remain the same and though you didn’t think it was possible, you have become accepting of that mentality.

Because you have become more open to change and allowing yourself to listen to your true inner thoughts and signs from the universe, you feel as though you have discovered so much more purpose.

Don’t get too worried, you still want to go to law school and become the best lawyer the world has seen, but for now at least, you have a new path that you must go down.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that your new path involves writing.

However, I want you to know that you won’t just be writing for others, but producing your own content and teaching others how to write as well. You have put a hold on law school, but you haven’t stopped wanting to help others. After assisting others with their work and realizing that your guidance allowed them to become better writers and content producers, I saw that we needed to take this to the next level. I am currently working towards building an organization in which you will be working with individuals to improve the fundamentals of their writing. Whether it be an academic paper, a college application essay or a resume for the job of their dreams, your goal will be to provide people the guidance to produce these items on their own and ensure that their content contains the quality they need to succeed.

We won’t just be writing for people, but showing them how we write, why our writing is so good and how they can get to the greatness of writing that we are at. You have been developing so much and I am so proud of the woman that we have become.

You didn’t think about it when we were younger, but we now have a website called The Monroe Movement. I am so proud that we could form this site and share it with others. We have always been told that we’re great at storytelling, so now I have taken our talent and displayed it to the world. What will surprise you even more is that you aren’t just a poet anymore. You have become an EXCELLENT academic writing, you are beyond a pro at editing and proofreading, you’ve gotten a good grasp of how to develop resumes and cover letters, and you have taken on the challenge of becoming a grant writer. You are a novice at grant writing, but, there is no form of writing that you could never overcome! And though, at times, you had been distracted from your writing and at times you ignored your notebooks, I am so thankful that you always came back to them.

Had you not kept your dedication to your pen and paper active, I would not have had the epiphany that I had a few months ago with what I exactly wanted to do with our life.

I know we spent a lot of our life questioning ourselves, wondering if we were good enough to achieve all the dreams we have, and I want you to know that I am still scared, but I am not quitting.

We are no longer in the mentality in which fear can hold us back. Fear will always be there, but the barrier is glass instead of bricks now.

We are not as frightful to face challenges and are much more accepting of letting go of things that are harmful to us. We used to be comfortable with keeping stuff that was toxic for us, just because we thought we needed those things in our life or were scared that if we let this thing go, nothing else would come; well, this mindset is gone. I have found a lot of closure with our issues and though we still have a lot of issues to work out, we have accepted them and can work on working them out; makes sense? We can’t just keep trying to brush everything under the rug; the pile has gotten too big. I’ve been working on getting us away from the idea of making moves due to fear, to now making moves due to thinking. Instead of dumping our emotions into a decision, I’ve gotten better at sitting back, analyzing the situation at hand, and responding with my thinking instead of with how I’m feeling. You’ve gained a lot of control over your life with this shift in mindset. We have gotten way better at believing in the power of Deiona and not letting anything or anyone distract us from it.

We have a long life to live young lady, so don’t worry, we still have plenty of growing to do.

Now, let’s make it happen,

Big Deiona
