Don’t Stress Over Stress!

 

I’ve had a pretty tough month, and it’s been especially tough these last few days. Between family challenges, friends leaving for college, others falling away and trying to focus on continuing to build my business while making money in the process, it adds up to a lot of stress.

 

Some days I feel like I am starting to get myself together, and then others, all I want to do is lay in bed all day and forget about my responsibilities.

 

I’ve struggled with depression and anxiety ever since I was in high school, and I have always had a pretty good understanding of them. I know how they work, when they come up, what triggers them and what fixes them.

 

So I know that when I feel like I have this last month, the most important thing for me to do is to step aside, (or lay down!) and just separate myself from the situation for a while. It also helps me to create a personal action plan for dealing with my stress.

 

After I have had time to calm down, it is usually much easier for me to assess the situation and choose how to go about handling it. Some problems require me to create a step-by-step process and others might mean all I have to do is keep calm until it passes completely.

 

No matter how you choose to go about fixing or handling the situation, you have to remember to always be gentle with yourself. It is really easy to put yourself under a lot of pressure because you just want the problem to be fixed. You feel like other people don’t have the same problems, or you have found that others do have the same problem, but the have figured it out much easier and faster than you have.

 

It doesn’t matter, though, because they are not you. You have to worry about yourself. And you are human, so you’re going to have many times in your life like this. Being gentle with yourself is going to make handling things a lot easier if you don’t allow yourself to be stressed and worried about other people.

 

When I was younger, I used to compare myself to others and they always seemed to have everything together, or when they didn’t, they could fix things faster than I could. It upset me even more, and instead of focusing on fixing my own problem, I brought myself down by worrying about others.

 

Focus on yourself, and whatever you are going through will seem so much easier.

 

Understand that things take time, too. Like I said, some situations might be fixed by creating a process, others might require you to wait it out or do some introspective work. Whatever it is, know that it’s okay if it takes a while. Rome wasn’t built in a day, you know!

 

See if there is anyone that you trust that you can talk to as well. This is a tip that works really well for me, because I find that I always have a lot going on in my head, and having someone around to talk to helps to organize all of my thoughts.

 

I usually wind up talking to my mom, or a really close friend who understands what I am going through. Don’t be afraid to reach out if you need help, that’s what family and friends are there for!
